I arrived at Speaking Mastery with a mix of curiosity and caution. I had just come off a rather disappointing experience with the Social Media course – nothing to do with the team, simply a feeling that the format wasn’t for me at that moment. So I stepped into this programme with some trepidation, not entirely sure what I was looking for, but very aware that something in my speaking practice needed to shift. For years I had spoken in academic settings with ease, yet I knew I wanted to grow beyond that world. I wanted to shape talks that could reach wider audiences, from TEDx to corporate stages, and I wanted to do it with authenticity rather than performance anxiety. This course changed the way I see myself as a speaker. Eric and the other students created a space where I could take risks, experiment, and discover a different kind of voice – one that thinks on its feet, stays open, and trusts that what I have to say is both unique and worth hearing. That, for me, has been transformative. Four months into the course I delivered my TEDx talk on AI intimacy and the human need for love. It remains one of the achievements I am most proud of, not only because of the talk itself but because of who I had to become in order to deliver it. One lesson I will carry with me always is surprisingly simple: when things go wrong, or you are asked to adapt at the last moment, just breathe and say, “No problem.” It sounds tiny, yet it changes everything. It shifts you from panic to presence. I leave this programme with a renewed sense of confidence and clarity. I know there are still a few blocks to clear – isn’t that always the case? – but I am moving forward with far more joy, courage and trust in my own voice. Then it got worse. In October last year I turned 60 and not only did I feel and look old I had a breast scare. I knew then I had to change. I was blessed that everything turned out ok but I knew it was a WARNING sign. My body was screaming at me and I had to listen. No more excuses! I started looking and looking for a program that would be right for me. Nothing on the market felt right. I didn't just want a weight loss program again. I wanted a life change. I also appreciated the insights we received on business strategy, sales, social media, and even body language, which made the learning experience a lot richer than I expected. I didn’t really have the skills or the tools to be the kind of mom I really wanted to be. So, when Eric asked me, “What’s your why?” the answer that came to me was, “I want to learn to communicate with my son in a way that I wasn’t able to before.” I’m an entrepreneur at heart. I’m also a marketing and business development consultant and a strategic coach. I’ve done a lot of speaking engagements in the past, and I’ve realized that my passion is really helping people and businesses grow. Eric is a phenomenal speaker, and I’ve heard so many amazing things about this program. I know he has the ability to take people from being terrified of stepping on stage to speaking confidently in front of an audience in such a short amount of time. Although I wouldn’t say I particularly have stage fright, what I really want to learn is how to create a presentation, keynote speech, or talk without having to rely on slides or notes. That’s been a real struggle for me. Even when I use notes or an iPad, I still miss key points, and I end up feeling like I didn’t deliver the message I truly wanted to convey. This is why I’m so excited about working with Eric—he’s a master at teaching us how to speak without notes. When Eric asked us about our “why” and why we want to be speakers, it really got me thinking. I’ve always called myself a speaker, and I’ve spoken many times, but I put a lot of that on hold. When I thought about my “why,” what really came to me was the desire to communicate better with my son. I want him to learn how to communicate with others in a way that I wasn’t able to show him. I had him when I was 19, so I didn’t really have the skills or tools to be the kind of mom I wanted to be. I’ve had a lot of “aha” moments during this program where I’ve realized some of the things that are holding me back. From a strategic standpoint, understanding how to build a presentation using stories has been a huge learning experience. On the first afternoon, I had a little breakthrough that I’m still processing and exploring. It’s helping me understand why I’ve sometimes chosen to step out of the spotlight. I’m still exploring that, but it was a huge awareness. I realized I sometimes prevent myself from shining. I remember when I was in grade 3, I was the emcee for my Christmas concert, and I loved it. They pulled the mic away from me because I didn’t want to stop talking. My parents have shared that memory with me, and that theme of “shining too bright” has stayed with me. When I start to have fun speaking with someone, a message from my past creeps in that tells me to stop talking. I love how Eric emphasizes that most of us have experienced this, where we’re told to stop talking or that speaking too much is bad. That’s where we start dimming our light and not using our voices as much as we should. What really surprised me about the program—though not in terms of its format—was the exercise we did yesterday. Each person had to stand on stage and feel the energy of the audience. We worked on developing our stage presence, and that was really powerful. I actually felt emotional a few times because you could see people just standing there, absorbing the energy of the group. There were a couple of participants who had challenges with this, but with a little bit of Eric’s guidance, their confidence shifted dramatically in just a minute. They were standing taller and more grounded, and it was amazing to see that transformation. I would recommend this program to anyone. We’re only two days in, and I can already see that it’s much more than just a speaking program. It’s really a program that helps you communicate clearly and effectively. I wanted to learn how to present myself and become a better public speaker. The Speaking Academy was pretty awesome. Eric is the real deal—he’s the same person on stage as he is off. Hero Story – From Silenced to Stage Before Speaking & Influence Mastery, I was already a senior RAF Wing Commander and published author… but I was still hiding in plain sight. I could brief, present, and “do PowerPoint”, yet my true story... nine Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), breaking generational abuse, leading with vulnerability in uniform... stayed locked behind rank, slides, and statistics. My inner critic (“Whisper”) was very effective at telling me: “You’re not good enough. Not worthy. Why would they listen to you?” I enrolled in this Mastery because I knew my message was bigger than my fear. I wanted world-class stagecraft to match the depth of my mission: showing leaders that trauma touches every workplace, and that self-aware, trauma-informed leadership saves lives, not just careers. The Speech Map, structure tools, and coaching from Eric and the other mentors were the missing link. They helped me turn a lifetime of chaos into a clear 4-part story arc that landed emotionally and intellectually. Fast-forward to October: I walked on stage in front of around 500 people in UK Defence to deliver “The Power of Conscious Trauma-Informed Leadership.” I wove in four core stories to cement my points: A young airman whose life changed because his RAF Flight Commander (me), a trauma-informed leader, saw pain and potential behind “poor performance”. My own ACEs and complete breakdown after my abusive father’s death. My AWARE framework, born from slowly turning unconscious reactions into conscious choices. A legacy close: “No matter the hand of ACEs we are dealt, we get to reshuffle the deck for a brighter outcome. Our past does not define our future; we get to rewrite our narrative.” The response stunned me. Over 90% of the audience rated the talk 5/5, with very high intent to apply trauma-informed leadership. People wrote things like: “Drop the mask first.” “Stop being a chess piece, start being a chess player.” “Whisper – such a simple concept, told with powerful personal meaning.” “It’s powerful to hear a hopeful survivor voice – this landed in a way clinical texts simply don’t.” One attendee with several ACEs, currently in EMDR, said my story made them feel less alone and gave them concrete next steps for healing and leadership. Another said, “We can reshuffle the deck…” would stay with them for life. A few weeks later in November, I spoke at the UK Defence Aircrew Survival Evasion Extraction Resistance (SERE) Centre about authentic leadership and psychological resilience and readiness. I signed the Wall of Honour after I spoke. Their motto, Animus Invictus (“Unconquered Spirit”), mirrors my own journey where I chose not to become a victim of my past but rather live my life with a victor mindset. Mid-talk I realised: “I’m literally standing in the holodeck I visualised with Eric... sharing, out loud, the chapter of my life when my husband used to lovingly call my ‘bat sh*t crazy shamooli days’... the times my nervous system was in full meltdown… and how I transformed.” Same Jacqui. Same scars. But now my voice is structured, embodied, and unapologetically alive. I wasn’t just “giving a talk”; I was creating a ripple I could see in real humans, real feedback, real intention to lead differently. The very next day, I was also honoured to receive the "Best Newcomer" speaking award at the Public Speakers Academy for another talk I delivered in October, a powerful validation of how far my voice has evolved throughout this Mastery. Before this program, I was terrified of public speaking. I had a very important message I wanted to share, but I had no confidence in my ability to articulate my message, let alone express it in an engaging way.
